Cool Iron Horse Mine

The first fight I am in after entering Iron Horse Mine from the southern portal made my screen freeze. I could hear the action happening though.

This happened 3 times, so I entered Iron Horse Mine from the Northern portal. & the same thing happened.
Has anyone else experienced this bug ?

Game freezes normally aren't the result of a bug in the game. Moving this to Technician's Corner, so they can help troubleshoot.

try running a gw.exe -update from a command prompt and go again. Check for any memory errors or HDD space issues in your pc. See if it happens with any other characters or if anyone else experienced the issue at the same time as you. Send the details + screen shot to Anet.

I am a gamer, not a geek. I am not saying that you are either, caballo, but that I have no idea how to go about what you suggest.
So plz, how do I run a gw.exe -update from a command prompt ?
What is a gw.exe update ?
What is a command prompt ?
How do I check memory errors ?
How do I check HDD space issues ?
What is HDD ?

I would v m appreciate help on these questions, as they are foreign concepts to me, and your answers may help other readers too. Thx.

If you're in Vista, check this thread: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10169426

Don't worry about memory errors or HDD (hard disk drive) space issues yet.

If you're not in Vista...let me know...

I am in Vista, & did the procedure in Katsumi's post.
I try different characters & in HM too, but the same screen freeze.
Screen freezes at the point in Iron Horse Mine where the snow starts to fall.
It matters not the time I take to reach this point while in this area.
Remembering that I travel thru Traveler's Vale or Anvil Rock to reach this area.
No problem anywhere else, or any campaign
(maybe the snow falling is the problem).
Is it just me, or anyone else experiencing this problem ?
That would narrow it down, if I knew that much.

It's just you, probably. My guess is that you either have a corrupted gw.dat file, or your graphics card/chip can't handle some feature in Iron Horse Mines.

If gw.dat is corrupted, your simplest approach is to try the -image command as in the link posted earlier. That link is a little over complicated though - if you already have a shortcut on your desktop for GW, you can simply right-click, select "properties" and edit the "target" line in the shortcut to add the "-image" command. Be sure to remove the "-image" command after the download is done. It's a long process btw, so you'd want to let it run overnight or while at work/school.
Alternately, you could do the same sort of thing except use "-repair" instead of -image.

If it's the graphics - the only real solution is an upgrade. You have yet to tell us what hardware you have.

I would not think it is my hardware, but will follow up on that next.

Quaker, could you plz give step-by-step directions for "-repair" after right clicking open the properties window from the desktop icon, & opening the shortcut tab ?

This would be appreciated thx, as I am PC illiterate.
(& anything that needs removing once I am done)

Highlight the text in the box below, right-click and select Copy.
Code:
"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\gw.exe" -repair
In Windows, click on the "Start" bubble-thing and then in the box marked "Start search" at the bottom. Right click in there, select "Paste", then press return.

The above assumes that your Guild Wars was installed in the default location - I'd guess it was

Right click on your GW shortcut on your desktop (or quick launch bar) - select "properties"
The "target" line (under the Shortcut tab) should say something like:

"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\gw.exe" - (your path may vary)

Edit the line so that it says:

"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\gw.exe" -image - note that -image is outside the quotes.

When you run this, it will download all the GW data and fix/replace your gw.dat. This takes a long time - it's 4gigs or so - so you'll want to do it while you sleep/work/school. When it's finished, be sure to remove the "-image" to get GW to run normally again.

You could also try using "-repair" instead of "-image", but I haven't tried that myself.

(thank the Maker for cut&paste )

PS - as mentioned above you could also go to Start, then select "Run" and type the "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\gw.exe" -image into the box. That way you don't need to edit anything.

A defrag would be of benefit too, I would think. To me it sounds like the file is fragmented and when seeing for the part of the .dat file where the next area is it has to seek across the disk and that's where it's making you freeze.
